The SHOOTOUT, on April 24 was a rousing success with 69 riders from all over Northern California enjoying our great weather and our covered arena that kept the earlier in the week rain off the ground. The ground was good, at least it must have been since we had lots of arena records set and some serious times made toward Hall of Fame, Senior Elite Hall of Fame and AAA buckle recorded. Anna rose and her pony set blazing times and broke old records one show and their own new times the next show. Diane Williamson picked up times she needed toward Hall of Fame and is really closing in on that award. Judy Sharp picked up two more times toward her Senior Elite Hall of Fame and is getting close. Go Diane and Judy!
We enjoyed seeing some old friends who haven't been around for a while. Jim Bragg and Malinda Bragg Stewart came back after a few shows they missed due to High School Rodeo. John and Ashley Banks showed up, John riding a horse he said he wasn't sure was saddle broke and named AAA. Is that the power of positive thinking, John. Ashley rode Rabbit and Rooster. What is it with the farm animals, Banks? Becky Carroll came and rode her old reliable Bella and it was fun seeing her on that good sensible horse. Kelsey Boriiolo showed up with a cute new pony named Hershey. Look out Pony riders, this one is gonna be tough. It was nice to see Briana Croffoot riding again.
I got a big thrill when I went back to the booth to discover Sandy Worrell sitting at the computer. For those of you who are new Sandy was our computer operator for every single show from the time we took over District 27 years ago until early this season when she was struck with a VERY serious medical problem and we had no idea if we'd ever see her back again. She looked wonderful and pitched right in and helped out. It was so good to see her. I have great hopes she'll be back in her seat at the computer next season.
From District 27-THANK YOU to all of the great people that make our shows successful. You time writers, judges, gate people, equipment setters, awards helpers, Junior Board Members, Show Secretaries and announcers....are the reason it is possible and alot of FUN!

April 10, 2010
Well, we dodged the bullet again. Yesterday was a great day and today is awful. It's gray, cold, windy and pouring down rain. Are we lucky or what? When is Spring coming? I'm really ready, sick of sweat shirts, mud boots and filthy long haired horses. I crave sun shine.
What a great show. Sixty riders came out, the arena was dry and we were able to run those long fabulous speed events. I've been practicing flags for a month and could hardly wait to show off my new skill. So I dropped the darned flag before I got to the first barrel. They don't call me fumble fingers for nothing. Actually, it was Magic's fault. I got my fingers caught up in his tangled mane. You don't suppose brushing it out would help?
We had 4 new riders at the show. A big Castle Country Welcome to Nicolle Herzog who is rejoining CGA after a long time off. Sienna Kelly came up to ride with us from Elk Grove and that handsome young guy, Owen Gleeson riding that cute spotted pony, Mr. Dots and that gorgeous big sorrel named Jet. Look out everybody, Owen is gonna be hard to beat one of these days. It was good to see Bert Friel again all the way up from District 6. And welcome to Erin Maurer and her horse Aariele who snatched up the AA Hi Point award.
Speaking of new, we have a new member but I don't think she'll be making many of our shows. It's a long story but I'll try to make it interesting. After our last show I sent Missy Alexander an email asking about her membership card. Got a funny email back saying, "My name is Leslie, not Missy but this sure sounds interesting." I thought that was odd but then sent out the long missive after Jamboree. Got back "I have no idea who you are or what you are talking about." Finally I figured it out. Her email address is one letter different from Missy's and somehow I had Missy's in my address list twice, one right and one wrong. Leslie was getting all my emails. So I wrote her again and apologized and asked who and where she was. I figured she must be around here somewhere since her email address was so similar. WRONG! She lives on a ranch 40 miles east of Amarillo Texas!!! Her husband is a cowboy (a real one, not one who plays at chasing cattle like some of us do around here) and her two daughters ride, the younger one for fun and the older one working with her dad. So Leslie is a new member of CGA District 27 and if you ever get out east of Amarillo go look her up. You'll like her.
We had a few unplanned dismounts at the show. Little Owen Gleeson had no trouble with his feisty sorrel horse, but that little spotted pony dropped his head and flat bucked Owen off. Angela Stafford's horse balked at one of the barrels and Angela fell. I was told by those who watched that her horse stepped on Angela's hair. Whew, too close for comfort, Angela. Kelly Croffoot's horse, Samm changed directions at one Hurry Scurry jump and Kelly hit the dirt. His pride was badly bruised. The Rodeo award goes to Machaela Melrose who's new horse Apatche looked like he belonged to a bucking string. Macheaela stayed with him a long time but eventually hit the ground rolling. She, and all the others walked off and seemed to be fine. Gymkhana riders are tough, even when they're only 3 feet tall.
The biggest excitement of the day was when Anna Rose's speedy pony, Lil Brat lived up to his name in Hurry Scurry bolting across the arena and through the delineator tape into the other arena where little India Goss was riding Poles II on her new horse Continella. Continella turned around to face the out of control intruder as if to say, "Get out of my arena." and then calmly finished taking care of India. Lil Brat went on to get reserve Hi Point. If he'd finished Hurry Scurry he might have beaten Stryker out for first.
Except for AAA+ (come on, Diane, let somebody else win once) all the divisions were really close. There were only a few points between Hi Point and Reserve and there was a tie for reserve in AA and for Hi Point in A. The crazy folks from Nevada ran off with both divisions of Future Champion with identical scores of 62. I'm always relieved when I hear from them after they get home safe. Diane Williamson got a Flags time she needs for Hall of Fame and Judy Sharp got one she needs for Senior Elite. All of you who are going for State Year End awards let me know how close you are getting so we can keep track and cheer for you.

What a great show we had on March 13. Sixty six riders came out in spite of the fact that AGAIN we could only run the short events due to the mud in the East end of the arena. We should all be absolute experts at Speed Ball, Flags, F8S and Big T but mostly I just long for Barrels, Birangle, Speed Barrels and Single Stake. I hope Magic hasn't forgotten how to do all that. Again we signed up some new riders. A big Castle Country welcome to Kaitlin Kinnard who comes back to CGA after a long layoff, Karalie Missamore who decided to join her mom, sister and friend Jesika Borowick on the long drive over that snow filled pass on 88 all the way from Nevada, Rachel Siegel who came up from Rio Vista, and 10 year old Andy Zachary who handled his pony very well. We're glad to have you all with us.
The race is really heating up for our year end awards. We had lots of new sign ups at the last show as that was the last day to do it and I have been busy getting everyone entered in the computer to be sure you get all the points you have earned. Only two shows to go and you don't want to miss one. There are a number of people who have only ridden in 3 shows so far and must ride in the final two to be eligible. If you aren't sure of your status please email me or call me for information. Check out the standings on April 10 and talk to me if you have any questions.

Holy Carumba, the sun comes out and Gymkhana riders show up in droves. When we finally had them all signed up there were 79 riders for our show. They came from all over Northern/Central California from the coast to the mountains and all up and down the valley. They even came over the mountain from Nevada. We could have handled that all very easily had it not been for a few glitches. Our regular booth crew consisting of 5 tried and true members was decimated. Our regular computer operator was in the hospital, announcing and time writing captain was out of town and three regular time writers were home sick in bed as was the prime back up for the computer operator. Several brave souls stepped forward and what they lacked in experience they made up for with hard work and determination. It may not have been the smoothest show we've ever run but it definitely was a great team effort. I cannot thank Cierra Tunquist, Linda Mitchell, Steve Speth, Jerry Lopez and Brianna Hlavy's mom enough. Bill and Marce Stewart came right from the hospital where they were visiting Hannah who is down with Pneumonia. There were several others up there including our Pres Amanda Martin and Christy Johnston plus some whose names escape me. You were all wonderful and saved me from a nervous breakdown.
We had three involuntary dismounts during the show. Shay Kinnard and her horse parted company but she bounced right up and rode the rest of the day. Tricia Emerson's horse decided he was a bucking bronco. Tricia got up and gave San Geno a lesson in gentlemanly behavior. Our Lead Liner India Goss's horse spooked while Mom Nancy was leading him between events and India took a nasty fall. Mom took her to the hospital for a check up but it appears India is fine and will be back in the saddle again. A dismount would have been better than the 4 timer malfunction re-rides that Shelby Burchell had to do on her smoking hot pony. We all felt terrible about that happening to her.
More new to CGA riders joined us this time. Jesika Boronick and the Messamores, Kristy and Jeannie came all the way from Gardnerville, NV. Jeanie won Hi Point in 13 + and Kristy won the 3D jackpot. I told them if they win anything they have to come back. I think they will. Other brand new riders were Casey Calvin, Julianne McKenzie, Angela Stafford and Amber Woolever. A big CCR welcome to all of them.
The Castle Country Challenge will wind up this coming Saturday and CHALLENGE is certainly the word for it. In AAA there is only 1 point between 1st and 2nd and there are two more riders within easy reach of first. AA shows a 3 point lead for 1st and 4 or 5 horses within range. A division is a bit more spread out but there are four riders scrambling to take the reserve buckle. The 12 and under group is very close and in the 13 and over group there are 8 horses within range of that Champion buckle and only 4 points between 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The Pony race is really tight. I can hardly wait to see how it all comes out. Diane Williamson is all alone and lonely up there in AAA+. Come on all you AAA riders. All it will take is one AAA+ time to win that reserve buckle. You can do it, I know you can. Diane and the AAA riders are all glad that Rachel Fingerle and Jaden Mason didn't sign up for the Challenge. Those two are flying.
A bunch of us checked out the arena Sunday and that muddy mess at the east end was much improved. Still looks ugly but we rode in it with no problem. As I look out my window right now it's raining again. Not hard yet and no nasty wind so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. What ever happens we'll deal with it. At least we have a place to ride. I don't know who it is that ticked off Mother Nature like this but let's try to get back in her good graces again. We don't really mind the rain, we need it, but would appreciate a dry day on Saturday and PLEASE don't blow the rain into the arena.
Check out our Website at cga27.com for more information.
See you all Saturday.

Wow, have we ever had some wonderful shows! In spite of rain, wind, hail and even snow the riders keep coming to our shows. On January 9 there were 72 riders and then after even worse weather and a wet arena that forced us to alter the show events on January 23 where 65 riders showed up and nearly everybody signed up for our Castle Country Challenge buckle series. Forty five riders started working on points to win one of those fabulous buckles. And what a challenge it is going to be. So far only one horse has managed to run a AAA+ time which leaves a reserve buckle begging to be claimed. There are only a few points between 5th and 1st place in each division. There are just 10 points in AAA, 16 points in AA, 9 points in A, 27 points in FC 12 - , 9 points in FC 13+, and 27 points in Open Pony. If these seem like big differences think of it this way. One fist place and one second equals 20 points. Things can change dramatically next Saturday. I can hardly wait.
Again we had new to CGA riders join us. A big welcome to Tanna McGuire,(or is it Tarra) Angelina Carrion, Missy Alexander, Donna and Shay Kinnard, Bruce and Krista Eary as well as Cindy Stifel, Laurie Lord, Sandy Lockhart, David Frazier, Vivian Fischer, Diane Medlock, Jade White and Nancy and India Goss from the January 9 show. Sandy Lockhart had a nasty involuntary dismount that resulted in a broken thumb. We hope you are doing OK Sandy, and you and all your friends will come ride with us again soon.
If you paid your dues, either a renewal or new membership, be sure to bring your pink sheet with you to the next shows you go to until you get your card in the mail. It seems to be taking the state office a long time to get some people entered into the system. Last show one of our riders had to pay her dues again because she has never received her new card and did not show up on the state membership list. It happened to me once years ago so I knew how she felt.
I got an email today from Lisa Harp. If you don't know Lisa she's the lovely Red Head who announces and writes times all day at every show. Don't know what I'd do without her. I'm gonna find out Saturday as Lisa cannot be there!!! I hope we'll have lots of volunteers to take her place. Just sign up to do an event or even just half an event. We'll need two people for each arena in the booth. It's not hard work and you get to sit down and guess what...it's warm up there. It's also a great place to watch the riders.
We haven't had as much rain as I feared this last week. The arena should be drying out some. I have an idea. Let's all get together and sing. How's this sound. Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Some Day in May. I'll be going down to Ione later this week to check out the ground and report to Jeanne so she can plan what events we can run. I'll report to you what I find out. I'm hoping for the best. I've got a big horse, he needs those long events.

What a great group of Gymkhana riders we have at District 27. They won't be scared off by a little stormy weather. There were 27 brave soles in Ione Saturday and was I right or not? Did the storm hold off between 8 AM and 2:30 PM like I said? OK, so it rained a little off and on and was just cold enough to make the SOB food taste all that much better. Great Chili and dogs and MMM MMM tri tip!! Some riders were so determined they pulled their trailers out the night before just in case and one I know had set up an alternate over night for Saturday just in case he couldn't get home after the show. Did you make it, Jim?
I have to admit I had a near melt down when it became obvious that Sandy, who always does the computer work, wasn't coming. I was sure glad to see that red head of Lisa Harp, our head announcer/time writer coming up the steps. Steve Speth came up to take his place at the time writing table and found his seat already occupied by Gretchen, his wife. "It's warm up here." she informed him. I love it, we have a new booth team. We were still short a computer operator till Louise Tunquist, who just came to watch her students ride, volunteered. She'd never used a lap top before and had a little trouble with that funny mouse but she caught on quick and pretty soon her fingers were flying and she kept up, putting the times in as the events ran. Can't thank you enough, Louse. If I'd had to do it all we'd still be there.
It was great to see John Bradley there. He was either manning the Bradleywear booth or judging all day. No rest for the wicked, John. There were a lot of willing hands out there in the arena and on the gate. I know I didn't get all your names but I saw a lot of Drew Boriolo, Keith Kelly, Keith Morgan, Hannah Deason, Alexis McGrede and her dad, John McGrede. Thanks to all of you who make it possible for us to have a show.
It was nice to welcome riders new to District 27, Amanda Kelly, Jenny Madden, Karen Hoffee and Erica Feasel. We're delighted to have you join us. Jenny is new to CGA but her horse had it together and she took Reserve in A. Way to go Jenny. Karen Hoffee who is just coming back to CGA after a long absence just beat out Nicole Harp for High Point in FC 13 and over and Erica Feasel ran off with the High Point in the 12 and under group. Amanda Kelly beat Jim Bragg by one point to take Reserve in AA. What's with all these new people winning all the awards?
Katie Morgan is up to her tricks again pushing Mr. T to 4th place in AAA and taking High Point in A on that big buckskin Hurley. She also walked off with another Jackpot on Hurley. Keith may have trouble getting his roping horses back. Both Christina Leaman and Ciera Grayson were riding two horses and both Camanche and Pebbles are coming along great.
It was a fun show and if you stayed home because of the rain you missed out and we missed you. Don't forget our next show which is on January 9. See you then!

As usual Castle Country Riders had a bang up first show of the season. I thought we might be a little off since both Rio Linda and Clements were running shows but when the dust cleared we had 53 riders signed up. The weather was perfect and we got started just a few minutes after 10 and were through and packed up by 4:30 and that's due to so many wonderful helping hands. You really are an extraordinary group and those of us on the board can not thank you enough for all your help.
It seems last years 12 and under FC riders are growing up and moving on. Several have moved to the A and AA levels while others have climbed up to the 13 plus group. Some are even talking their parents into riding. Tricia Emerson's Mom, Shari, brought her trail riding horse, Rio, who was convinced those flags would eat him and the Hurry Scurry jumps were much easier around than over. Natalie and Nicole Harp were both riding different horses this year and have told me that Mom, Lisa, might ride one of their old horses one day soon. I look forward to that. Shawna Mitchell and Kimberley Littlejohn have a cute new pony named Penny while Simon is carrying Kyla Johnson and Hannah Mitchell so Mamma Michelle is working hard at Lead Lining. Lauren Johnston has a new horse named Xena who's looking good. Keith Morgan brought his daughter Katie with two horses to ride and she walked off with two Jackpot prizes. We missed KC who is healing from a fall and hope we'll see him next month on his new horse. We enjoyed seeing the Mann family with Susan, Brittney AND Darrin. Welcome Darrin, hope we'll see you next month.
There were lots of new people at the show. Lisa Walker and Sky Roberts came. Lisa didn't bring a horse but spent most of the day judging. Thank you so much for all your help Lisa. Daphney Buck came with two ponies, Gunner and Kat and it kept her pretty busy. Audrey Heckler did a great job of keeping her horse, Fancy, on the right track and Kyla Johnson had Simon under control. Amanda Kelly signed Gus up in A division and ran nothing but AA and AAA times while Catherine King's Badger's Champion was signed up in FC and ran almost all AA times. Ashley Lessa and Ju Ju looked good. Carla Mason was training Buckshot but Jaden just needs to get Breezy a little more consistent. He ran an FC time in Birangle and a Supreme time in Poles I which won him reserve Hi Point in the AAA+ division. Katelyn McConahy signed Chester up in FC but ran almost all A times.
Kelly Pearson has been working her pony Duke on cattle all summer and it paid off with Hi Point in Open Pony. Diane Williamson, riding Amanda's Super Ricochet was fabulous when Ricki wasn't taking the scenic route and took home the Reserve Pony prize. Diane's Whiskey ran off with the AAA+ Hi Point. The Williamsons will be eating turkey for a month. Rhonda Nunaly has really got Copper going good and took reserve in AAA to Lisa Bradley and Her Terms Hi Point. Jenna Speth and Cowboy took AA Hi Point with Kelly Croffoot in the Reserve spot. Joyce Driggers got the Hi Point dinner in A while Kim Corsini and Belle took Reserve. Megan Wilhelm and Rusty won Hi Point in FC 12/under and Morganne Parmley and Lucky 7 got Reserve. Nicole Harp's new horse, Financial Gold took the FC 13/over High point by just one point over Laura Ward and Dakota who got reserve. Congratulations to all of you.
We'll see you all next month on December 12 when we will again sign up at 9 and ride at 10. In January we'll begin signing up at 8 so we aren't finishing our show in the dark. Check out our Web Site at www.CGA27.com for all kinds of information and remember the state newsletter comes out near the end of the month and can be read on line at www.calgymkhana.com.

WOW! What a great show, what a great Castle Country Challenge Buckle Series and what a great season! I hope you all had as much fun as I did. Since I didn't sign up for the Challenge (I had to give Jim a chance) it was really fun for me to watch as the scores in each division changed every week. There were some very surprised people when they were announced as buckle winners but nobody was more thrilled or excited than little Kyra Allemand with her Open Pony Reserve Buckle. Everyone thought our buckles were fantastic and the beautiful trophies for our daily High Point and Reserve were very special too. Can't thank Kelly Croffoot enough for all his hard work this year finding our great awards. He's already working on our Year End awards and I'll bet they will be awesome too. Our tentative date for our year end party, banquet and awards is July 12. Put it on your calendar!
Welcome to brand new rider, John Walker who joined CGA at our show and did very well. Hope we'll see him at lots of shows around the area and back in Ione next November.
The High Point awards for the day were a hot contest. Danielle Sandy gave Diane Williamson a run for her money only losing the High Point by 2 points. Sally Rivera Lingafeldt ran off with the AAA but Judy Sharp only beat Jeanne Dudak out for Reserve by 4 points. Jim Bragg beat me for the AA High Point by 2 points and I only beat Rhonda Nunaly by 7 points. Joyce Driggers took the A High Point by 12 points but Kim Corsini was right on Michelle Littlejohn's tail for reserve. Only 8 points separated Briana Croffoot and Roxy Gatley in the 12 and under group and in the 13 and over division Natalie Harp beat Christina Leaman by 2 points and Hannah Deason was only 5 points behind Christina. Lots of excitement and fun.
We set a couple of District records. Most Unplanned Dismounts resulting in 5 accident reports, and most hi pitched screaming at an awards ceremony. Fortunately no one was seriously injured but lots of bruised pride and maybe some broken eardrums thanks to Kyra.
